We believe that everyone’s future can be richer, happier and more efficient, but you can’t embrace that future unless you take the first most crucial step, being informed of it.

Welcome to The Tipping Point, news from the most critical future industries curated for you every week so you can stay informed and prepared. No need to waste hours everyday researching, stay on top of it all with one post and then get back to doing what you do best.

The Tipping point is named after the point at which a new technology goes from being disappointing, expensive and buggy to exciting, exponential, cheap and mainstream. This point of change often sneaks up on and surprises everyone including industry experts!

No matter if you’re personally employed in the industry or just a lurker, The Tipping Point is vital to staying up to date and being ready to transition smoothly rather than getting caught off guard.

This Weeks News!

AI: OpenAI’s AI pwns human world champions, one less game we can now win

Yes… we humans have now been beaten by AI at yet another game. This time it’s the complex strategy computer game Dota 2. The winning AI from OpenAI womped five top pros from team OG which took first place at the The International, a world leading e-sports tournament last year. While it seems that AI’s ability to beat world class humans at more and more games has sky rocketed over the past 1-2 years it’s still good news as many studies have proven that when humans and AI work together they achieve better results than either one can get on its own. OpenAI plans centre around building an artificial general intelligence or AGI that they can then share with the world. According to our Technology Forecaster, that should happen around 2025 or so.

COMPUTING: WhatsApp actually increases privacy with a new update!

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has had their “Fix It Already” campaign ongoing for a while now which rightfully calls out 9 things various companies should fix in order to increase their customers privacy. So far only WhatsApp has responded by officially letting you choose who can add you to a group chat. So that’s 1 down… 8 to go.

CRYPTO: Bisq launches their DAO along side Bisq v1.0

After 5 years of hard work, Bisq has now launched their 1.0 version along side their Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) which will now on control the entire governance of the service. Users can now vote democratically on who gets compensated for what work towards the project and by how much. It also allows for cheaper trading when you use their native BSQ token too. If you’re wanting to trade cryptocurrencies or even trade crypto for fiat it’s a fantastic place to start and now that its governance is distributed as well as its network, it’s a very impressive piece of new tech. Hopefully we see more and more services and systems employ this highly robust, secure and privacy focused way of doing things in the future.

ENERGY: New bank launched to keep your money safe from fossil fuel investing

While you might not be aware of it, most big banks use your deposits to fund oil drilling, pipelines, coal plant construction and coal mine projects all around the world and have done for decades. While many of them are either cutting back on those investments or outright stopping them it’s good to see new banks popping up that flat out refuse to invest in this planet destroying garbage and instead only lend it to ethical, environmentally friendly projects. They also give you a half decent interest rate payback of 2% and $0 ATM fees too!

MEDICINE: Human heart 3D printed with human cells actually beats!

Scientists have made another amazing step towards one day printing entire replacement organs with a new 3D printed heart. Whilst only the size of a rabbit’s heart, it was 3D printed from human cells in under 4 hours and after a few days of being fed oxygen and nutrients began to beat. All cells in the printed heart weren’t beating in unison though which is obviously needed for it be effective, but it’s none the less an amazing step forward! With more and more work it’s hoped that one day we’ll be able to print personalised replacement organs for ageing patients enabling us all to live forever!

ROBOTICS: Drones can plant over 400,000 trees a day, build the Amazon in 1 year

Biocarbon Engineering now has drones that are being used in the real world to actually plant mangrove saplings in Yangon, Myanmar. The drones fly overhead and shoot biodegradable pods filled with germinated seed and nutrients into the ground as they go. The result is an absolutely astounding increase in speed at which we can now plant trees. Biocarbon Engineering states that with just 2 people controlling 10 drones over 400,000 trees can be planted in just one day. Taking this to a bit of an extreme with a bit of math, that would mean you could theoretically plant the equivalent of the entire Amazon rain forest in just 1 year using: 2,740 groups of 2 people with 10 drones each. To put that into context, if you did that for 2 years in a row, creating 2 more Amazon’s it would suck up more carbon each year than humans emit and completely stop climate change in its tracks. Bonkers.

ROBOTICS: Watch Boston Dynamics SpotMini robot pull a truck because why not?

SpotMini is a dog like robot that weights 25-30 kg and is now under production at Boston Dynamics. It appears they’ve made at least 29 of them so far – given the B29 marking on the ones in the video – and Boston Dynamics has already stated they plan on making around 100 this year for commercial sale. But who cares about that? You’re here to see them pull a truck reindeer style!

ROBOTICS: Google’s Wing gets aviation authority approval for drone deliveries in Australia

After one and half years and more than 3,000 trial deliveries Google’s sub company Wing has now gained approval from CASA, Australia’s aviation authority, to do public drone deliveries in a number of suburbs in Canberra, Australia. The deliveries will be from local businesses such as coffee shops or pharmacies and deliver the products within minutes. While it’s still not clear how widespread and popular drone delivery will become, this could be just the start of super fast, super cheap product delivery one day.

SPACE: First ever image of a black hole released to the world after years of work

A long time ago, in a galaxy 55 million light-years away, a black hole formed at the centre of the Messier 87 galaxy. Only recently though have humans become aware of black holes and over the past decade hundreds of scientists from over 20 countries have been working to create the first ever image of it. Even though it’s super blurry, even though it really doesn’t look like much at first glance, this is an amazing new discovery that will lead to more, better quality pictures that then yield even better ones always further expanding our knowledge of the universe. The team that produced it are now also working on imaging the black hole at the centre of our own galaxy. You can also get a bit more understanding about the image in the link above too.

SPACE: Falcon Heavy launches huge Arabsat-6A satellite, lands all 3 booster on point

Back down here on Earth SpaceX successfully launched the second Falcon Heavy mission on the 11th April sending the huge, almost 6,000 kg Arabsat-6A satellite into geosynchronous orbit. Although it was the second time it has launched, this was the first time Falcon Heavy has done an official commercial mission and it was just as spectacular too. Both side boosters landed simultaneously back at Cape Canaveral while the central booster also successfully landed on their autonomous drone ship out at sea. I don’t know what it is, but there’s just something about seeing two 14 story high orbital class boosters autonomously land at the same time that looks both perfectly natural and stunning at the same time. An amazing result by the whole SpaceX team. If you haven’t seen it I’d highly recommend watching the video below, the main launch and 3 booster landings all happen within about 10 minutes.

TRANSPORT: Tesla confirms all Model 3’s now come with their next gen FSD computer

Tesla have had a number of different computer versions in their cars over the years which controls their Autopilot system. Their next gen, version 3 computer which is simply called the “Full Self Driving Computer” or FSD Computer is now officially being built and installed in all Model 3’s that are coming off the factory lines. This new FSD computer is a significant step change over their v2 one which was housing an nVidia chip. The FSD is built with Tesla’s own in house neural net chip that has been designed specifically for the task. This has enabled them to increase performance by around 20x! Whereas the previous v2 computer was sitting at around 80%+ load with current software running, the new FSD computer is reportedly only at about 5% load. Tesla are also planning an “Autonomy Day” event on the 22nd April @11am PDT where they’ll be revealing more info on their soon to be launched autonomous driving network called Tesla Network.
